Sunny San Diego is known for its active, and often cheerful, communities. I went to college there, and it always stuck with me how more in shape the people of San Diego (and Southern California in general) were when compared to the rest of the country. It seems as soon as you hit the area, you desire to get in shape. In San Diego, fitness goals infect you somehow. A friend of mine just moved to San Diego, and wouldn’t you know; she asked me where she should go running. I compiled a list for her, and I figured I’d share it with you as well.
This is my personal favorite – and a love of a good chunk of the San Diego fitness community. There is over 50 mi. of trails and paths with great views. There are also cool museums and a little art community to check out when you want to take a break. This is my favorite because you can always change it up, there is plenty of room so as not to make you have to weave around pedestrians, and you don’t have to worry about cars at all.
Ocean Beach gets a bad rap pretty often – but it has some of the greatest locales in San Diego. Taking a run along the beach overlook here at sunset/sunrise is a real treat. If you are going to be in San Diego, you have to make some excuses to see the beach – otherwise, you’ll be like those people who live in San Francisco but have never even walked across the Golden Gate Bridge.
The island of Coronado can take a while to get out to but is well worth the trip. Head over to the area the Hotel Del is at, and you can have a lovely run with some great views. Mind the ghosts, though.
